IBM Thailand says risks from the political situation and natural disasters are spurring demand for its latest IT product, the portable modular data centre (PMDC).
Yos Kimsawatde, the country manager for integrated technology services, said the PMDC was being offered in Thailand for the first time in answer to emerging demand for mobile data services. He expects at least 10 to be sold in Thailand this year.
The PMDC is a fully functional data centre in a pod-like form with a complete physical infrastructure including power and cooling systems and remote monitoring.
It is suitable for use in remote areas for purposes such as weather system monitoring thanks to its mobile nature.
"This country has experienced sudden business discontinuity in recent years due to natural disasters and political unrest, increasing demand for small back-up units designed for just such emergencies. Normally, building facilities offer only telecommunications and utility backups," said Mr Yos.
PMDCs start at US$500,000 for a single unit housed in a standard 6.1-metre shipping container that can be delivered in only 12-14 weeks.
